« Ettwan zoo schritt von der statt, vor Sant Germans thor, habe ich [400] noch ein ander schön, alt, römisch gebeüw gesehen, (Palatium Galieni oder Galerne oder Palais Galien) Galieni Pallast genennet, welches gebeüw in verlengter ey form von kleinen, gehauwenen kibling steinen wie dab erst unndt die zu Augst bey Basell aufgerichtet, also dab nitt zuzweiflen, es sey ein amphitheatrum gewesen, ist 370 schu lang unndt 230 schu breit. Zu ehren diesers keysers Galleni, von dem dab amphitheatrum seinen nammen bekommen, haben sich auch die disers landts Galienos heiben laben. »
= About two hundred paces from the town, beyond the Saint Germain Gate, I saw yet another beautiful, old, Roman building, known as the ‘Gallian Palace’ (‘Palatium Galieni’ or ‘Galerne’ in Latin or ‘Palais Galien’ in French). It is shaped like a long egg and constructed with small stone blocks, like the first one and also like the buildings in Augst, near Basel. There is no doubt that it is an amphitheatre. It is 370 feet long and 230 feet wide. In honour of the emperor Gallian, after whom the amphitheatre is named, the name ‘Galieno’ is also used to designate the whole region.
