The amphitheatre was mentioned for the first time in 1604 by the royal engineer Pierre Garrigues (Antiquités de Narbonne. Recherches historiques sur les antiquités de la France, t. X, Aude, Narbonne, Bibliothèque municipale de Narbonne, ms. 25, f. 1)
