The ‘Pont du Gard’ was probable the most universally admired Gallo-Roman monument
« Zenacht kam ich in das dorf Serinac, bleib do übernacht. Des morgens [27 juin] zogen wir nit wiit von dannen, die wunder bruck, so dryfach über daß waßer geth, z°u[°sous u] besichtigen, Pont du Gard genant, do die underst nechst ob dem waßer sex bögen hatt, die ander, so auf deren stoth, elf, und die oberst, so auf der mittlesten stoth, 35, von mercklichen großen quadersteinen; ist gar hoch, gondt von eim berg zum anderen, oben bedeckt, inwendig wie ein canal, darduch daß waßer gefiert worden vor zeiten, wie nochvolgende figur, die ich domolß abgerißen, anzeigt. [ ] [230] Den 25 zogen wir gon Serinac, do wir ze morgen aßen, und nochmittag giengen wir hinus zu der drifachen bruck Pont du Gard, die ich vor auch besechen hatt, zu besichtigen [ ] bleiben zu Serinac die nacht. »
= At supper time, I arrived in the village of Sernhac, where I stayed overnight. In the morning [27th June] we visited, at no great distance from the village, the ‘Pont du Gard’, a wonderful bridge, comprising three levels above the water. The lower level, close to the water, has six arches, the next, above this one, eleven, and the uppermost level, above the middle one, thirty five. It is constructed with remarkably large stone blocks; it is very high and stretches from one hill to another. The top level, which is covered, contains a channel, in which water ran in the times gone by, some indication of which can be seen in the rough sketch I made […]. On the 25th, we went to Sernhac; the next morning and afternoon we spent going over the bridge, the ‘Pont du Gard’, that I had already visited and inspected…
