The edifice, situated at the foot of the city walls, north of the Porte d’Arroux, was in fact a funeral monument that existed until the late 18th century
« Ad Septentriones abluitur amne, qui Arronx sic vocatur : vastissima turris rotunda, magna ex parte rupta, præsidium vrbis coniicere licet, aditum in flumen & vrbem ab hostibus vindicans ; quippe à pyla, quæ ab amne sumpsit nomen distat passibus ducentis. Tertia autem est de ipsa tabula. »
