Autun’s south-eastern city gateway, the ‘Porte de Rome’, formerly known as the ‘Porte des Marbres’, was called the ‘Porte de Chalon’ in the 17th century
« Quæ à marmore igitur dicitur pyla, prima nobis dicetur etiam si obliterata sit, & nouis vrbis munimentis substrata. [ ] [43] portam, quæ à Marmore dictam diximus, non visemus, quia non extat, sed fundamentis ipsius insidet agger, seu vrbis nouæ munimentum, & insignitur in ultima Tabula. »
