Modern archaeologists seem unaware of Du Rivail’s observation (Buisson 1990, p. 73)
« et prima fundatione angustum more vetusto erat, sicut veteres oppidi portæ et muri cum vallo testantur. »
= The first city walls were very narrow, as was the way then; the old city gates, walls and ramparts all attest to it.
