The eight porphyry columns originally belonged to a temple situated in the north-eastern corner of the city. They sank near the ‘Pont Saint-Esprit’ along with the boat that was transporting them. The anonymous author’s text was copied in 1776 by the abbot Bonnemant from the original version conserved in the cabinet of M. Nicolay
