« Daß Arles gar ein mechtig uralte statt muß sein, zeigen neben vielen antiquiteten, die da zesehen, auch die greber zu Sant Honoré, sonderlich aber daß schön, groß amphitheatrum in der satt an. […] [89] Es sinndt inn unndt außerthalb der statt Arles so viel alte sachen zesehen, daß, Nismes außgenommen, nitt baldt ein ort in gantz Franckreich gefunden wirdt, da in solchem kleinen bezirck so viel antiquiteten gefunden werden. »
= That Arles is a very ancient town is clear from the many antiquities that can be seen there, such as the tombs at Saint-Honoré and, above all, the large and handsome amphitheatre situated in the city itself. [ ] Both within and around Arles, so many ancient things can be seen that, with the exception of Nimes, no place in France contains so many antiquities in such a small area.
