The order of the plates vary according to the edition and even the copy of the book. The pier, represented in a very dilapidated state in the left-hand engraving by Chastillon, stood, in Roman times, beside the road connecting Saintes and Poitiers, not far from Varaize. Known as the ‘Fanal of Varaize’ (or alternatively ‘Fanal of Villepouge’ or the ‘Fanal of Chagnon’), it was destroyed in 1840
