Certain historians have identified the site of the Daurade as that of a temple dedicated to Isis; others with a temple dedicated to Jupiter. That a Roman temple existed in the Daurade area is certain; the divinity to which is was dedicated is not. Zinzerling stayed in France from 1612 to 1616
« Iovis Hammonis templum fuisse volunt, quod Beatæ Virgini consecratum ; Apollinis, quod D. Quintino. Ab illo etiam plateam nomen adhuc custodire putant quæ Portaria dicitur, quasi porta Arietis. »
= The temple supposed to be have been dedicated to Jupiter Ammon is now dedicated to the Virgin; that supposed to be dedicated to Apollo is now dedicated to St Quintin. It is believed that the name ‘Porterie’, by which this square is known today, is derived from ‘Porta Arietis’ [Gate of the Bull the bull being associated traditionally with Jupiter].
