The quadrifrons (square-sided) arch which constituted the base of the obelisk stood on the spina of the circus
« Est et Pyramis spectatæ pulchritudinis, admodum parva, medio milliari ab urbe Vienna, sub Lugduno sita, quæ ad latus in vinea erecta stat : sed ea ab itinere longius non abest, quàm ut uno lapidis jactu pertingi possit. Antiquissima est, sed fortè hæc Pyramidis nomine propter exiguitatem digna non est, veram quoque Pyramidis formam non habet, neque Obelisci, quanquam ad Pyramidem magis accedat quàm ad Obeliscum. »
