The theatre was identified as the amphitheatre until the 19th century
« Amphitheatrum, opus antiquum Romanum, adhuc interiori ædificio satis conspicuum, murisque veteribus è prægrandibus saxis illustre. »
= The amphitheatre is an ancient edifice built by the Romans; its inside is still rather remarkable and it is famous for its ancient walls, constructed with enormous stones.
