This time the edition published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1642 is the Regola in five languages (Italian, Dutch, French, German and English). Janssonius combined the 1629 Utrecht edition that had replaced the German version with an English text with the one from 1620 of which he repeated the German text. Compared to his predecessors, his innovation consisted of deleting Vignola’s dedication. For the rest, he kept the traditional presentation of the texts explaining the plates, one after the other, to which the English translation was added. The plates of the orders are identical to those of the 1620 and 1629 editions ; one finds the same inversions and Vignola’s portrait is the same.
This was the last polyglot edition. Le Muet’s Vignola in paperback format, very popular in France, and its translation into Dutch published in Amsterdam as early as 1638, in German in 1651, then in English in London in 1655, competed from then on with this sort of book, more costly, intended more for sponsors than for practitioners.
