The quadrifrons (square-sided) arch which constituted the base of the obelisk stood on the spina of the circus
« Morndes den 24 octobris giengen wir fir die statt hinus, besachen ein alten spitzigen turn, den die Römer vor zeiten gebuwen hatten; ist ein piramis, gefiert und gar oben auß zugespitzt, inwendig hol, ein firnemme antiquitet. »
= On the morning of the 24th October, we went out of the town to visit an old pointed tower that the Romans built in times past. It is a pyramid, has four sides, a very pointed top, is hollow inside and is of a fine old age.
