The remains of subterranean works beneath the ‘Porte de Cavalerie’, attributed by Saxi to the Saracens besieged by Charles Martel, were probably parts of a main sewer and an evacuation conduit
« at uicti se in tutiora loca recepere ; cuniculos enim miro opere fabricatos in diuersas agrorum partes erumpentes fecerant, quos annis praeteritis vidimus, dum uallo muniretur porta militaris, licet fluentibus disiectisque temporum iniuria fornicibus. »
